Bars to Naturalization
Several factors can prevent an individual from becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization, even if they are otherwise eligible.
Common Bars Include:
- Criminal History: Certain convictions, crimes of moral turpitude, aggravated felonies
- Immigration Violations: Fraud, illegal entry, deportation orders
- Moral Character: Adultery, failure to pay taxes, failure to register for Selective Service
- Allegiance: Membership in Communist Party, oath refusal
- English/Civics: Inability to demonstrate required knowledge
Permanent Bars vs. Temporary: Some bars are permanent while others may be overcome with time or rehabilitation
Waivers: Limited waivers available for certain bars
Careful evaluation is needed before filing N-400 applications when potential bars exist.
